Athos News Broadcast, live from JangoBritt

Last night, I sat in front of the TV, through dinner, with my family, and watched Minecraft Live 2021.
This was a bit of a turning point for me, firstly because it was a moment of acceptance, but also because it was an opportunity for my wife to see what it is that we do in Minecraft, and why we find a game with such low-poly graphics so interesting.

I mean, at age 39, “normal” society says I shouldn’t be playing “kids” computer games, right?

Well, this was an opportunity for my wife to see some of the graphics in the game, especially the incredible new 1.18 terrain generation that we are all so looking forward to, and to listen to how intensely the devs and community creators feel about the game.

From the whacky content creators like @eystreem that my 6 year old loves watching, to the more serious builders like @ThatMumboJumbo that I watch, it was nice for my wife to see that it was something the whole family can enjoy.

More relevant though, was the sense of community all of these creators portrayed with their clips.

I started playing Minecraft almost a year ago, when my son got it for his 6th birthday. I started playing only with him, but as my geeky nature took over, I started to realise just how much I enjoyed creating builds & redefine machines. My interest quickly outpaced his, and I found I was doing more creating in our realm than he was… and it was a bit lonely.

Right in the height of the UK’s second lockdown, I felt I had nobody outside of my family to talk to on a daily basis, as work was just that… work. Scheduled meetings took the place of casual workplace conversation and banter, and I felt very isolated, even with a family behind me to talk with.

Joining AthosCraft was one of the best things I did. Almost as soon as I joined, I felt accepted into the community, and I had interesting people from all around the world to talk to again.

“How come you aren’t all watching this together on a zoom call or something?” asked my wife.

Well…
